Hit a tire on the interstate.
You can still see the rubber on the hood....

Ouch! Glad it wasn't worse.
That, contrary to the usual retort around here, will sadly not buff out.

tire hit you looks more like it. tire and wheel? tire chunk from 18 wheeler? what was that? bummer.

Ah man that fucking sucks.
I see beat to shit pickups with tires in the back of the bed with no tailgate attached all the time. Makes me nervous as hell. How is that legal?

Sucks. Glad you weren't hurt.

Daaaaammmnnn.
On a positive note it looks to be just bolt ons that need to be replaced. Do it yourself and save some money!

Yikes! Was it bouncing around when you hit it? Good thing it didn't pop the airbags...seen that before...

It's a good thing that tire wasn't mounted, but holy crap that's a hit. Sorry for the great start to your day. Were you able to trace the tire to an offender so that you can trigger there insurance and not yours?
If not, here's hoping that your insurance company doesn't hurt your rate for someone else's carelessness.

Dang...

Is the other driver's liability going to cover it?

Typical German engineering, can't even handle a high-speed tire hit to the hood.

That's a hell of a hit, and some fairly expensive replacement parts/labor. You alright? Were you there for the separation of the tire (wheel?) from whatever source vehicle, or was it free-roaming road debris? Hope the repairs go well for you, looks to be a very nice VW (I'm fond of that color with the red GTI accents).

looks painful.

Right about here. Yep, that's the spot where I would have pooped my pants.

Was this tire still attached to a car of some sort at the time?
![]() 11/17/2014 at 12:53 |

Ouch! Glad tire didn't hit/go through windshield.

Oh Jesus H. Christ. Glad you're okay! Is insurance going to cover it at least?

Shit, man. Good to hear you're okay. A family friend was hurt for a long time when a tractor trailer tire hit her car. Hope your car gets fixed quick and cheap.

Loose tires can be deadly.
Years ago my friend's father was driving with his 4matic W124 Mercedes-Benz on a two lane rural highway. Suddenly a truck tire from the opposite direction appears and crosses the lane. Not a small pickup truck tire but a heavy duty truck tire with a wheel. He hits the tire with his left fender and the left front wheel does opposite lock to the left as the suspension gives up.
The poor Mercedes slides in totally uncontrollable way through the opposing lane. The Mercedes barely misses two big trucks and ends up in a ditch. He was lucky to survive with some bruises.

Hitting the windshield and just damaging it would have been preferable to the front of the car being smacked, but going through the windshield would not.

Exactly.

No other driver. It was just a carcass lying in the road.

...Wherupon the heated seats would gently melt it like fine swiss chocolate.

yea, it could have been a lot worse. Had GF in the car with me. Would rather total the car than lose her.

In South Carolina, there are no state inspections so people ride around in cars that are barely road worthy with used or retread tires.
![]() 11/17/2014 at 18:28 |

No other vehicle involved. This one is on me unfortunately.
![]() 11/17/2014 at 18:31 |

Nope it was just a tire carcass lying in the middle of a dark road. I havent got the estimate yet but the damage is almost entirely cosmetic. Drove it home after the hit.
What really sucks is i just waxed it....
![]() 11/17/2014 at 18:32 |

I would but i don't trust myself to match the paint and at this point the car is still too nice for me to half-ass it.

I have a TDI & got punted off the road by an Enclave a couple of weeks ago.

yea, airbags would have totaled it most likely. I dont know if it was upright or not.
![]() 11/17/2014 at 18:34 |

didnt get a great look after it hit me but judging from the size of the impact area i think it was a car tire.

they be slackin...
![]() 11/17/2014 at 18:35 |

As annoying as state inspections are, they really cut down on the number of poorly maintained crap-heaps and help prevent shit like this. SC doesent have them.

Thanks to all for your well wishes! insurance is covering the whole thing and hopefully i will have it back before christmas!

I hate it when that happens. Well, Hope you are okay.

Glad it didn't take out the core support up front. Those are a pain (and $$$) on VWs, sadly. Good luck with the estimate and hope you get it back better than new!
